Testicular cancer

Friday, 24th August, 2018.

That was the day I heard the words "I'm sorry to tell you but you have testicular cancer". That was the day when my world changed.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis at 25 bloody sucked. There's no other way to put it. It just f**king sucked! It sucked because I had just moved to England a few months earlier and now had to come home. It sucked because I finally felt like I had achieved something after years of study and now I had to put it on hold. It sucked because I was left questioning "why me?"

It was a really tough period of my life where there were days where I had little motivation to get out of bed. Where doing simple tasks drained the energy out of me and you question "Is it all worth it? Can I get through this?"

Through that 3 months of treatment there were some pretty dark days but thankfully I was able to get through to the other side and I am proud to still be here and in remission.

Last year I ran the Queenstown Marathon and used my diagnosis and recovery period as motivation to inspire others to get active and raise awareness of testicular cancer.

This year, i'm doing the marathon again to raise awareness of Movember but to also get people active to aware of their mental health. We have shocking suicide rate within New Zealand where young men and dying to early. It needs to stop.

So get behind me this Movember as I attempt to grow some upper lip hair, run a marathon and host and event for men's health !

Hi Dan,

I’m the Fundraising Manager for Movember New Zealand and wanted to say congrats for being in the top 10 on the New Zealand Individual Leaderboard!

As well as raising an incredible amount for men's health, I wanted to say thank you for sharing your story. It is so inspiring how far you've able to come and what you've been able to achieve in such a short amount of time since you were diagnosed. You being open to sharing your story also reflects the Movember conversation and I'm sure will help others to do the same.

Feel free to email me at alex.king@movember.com if there's anything I can do to help!

United we Mo,
Alex.
