Prostate cancer

On October 23, 2018, I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. The process of finding my cancer started when I turned 50 and decided to go in for a checkup. As part of that checkup I elected to have a PSA test and it came back a bit high at 5.3. After a follow up PSA test, a visit with a Urologist and subsequent biopsy cancer was found.

On May 21, 2019 I had a radical prostatectomy and received the good news that there was no evidence that the cancer had spread. Two and half years later my PSA remains undetectable which means there is no sign of any prostate cancer.

When prostate cancer is found early it is 99% curable through surgery. When it is found late, it is lethal. Talk to you doctor and get a PSA test. If you're still unsure, watch this story about actor James Michael Tyler (aka Gunther) who was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer at the age of 56 in September of 2019.

Three Short points this week.

1) A heart felt thanks to everyone who donated to my Movember fundraising efforts this year! The support and encouragement it gave me while I was waiting for test results was tremendous.
2) My urologist reviewed the additional test results and he was very confident that surgery would cure me from the disease. A referral to a Toronto surgeon went out on Friday Nov 30th which was a fitting way to conclude my official last day of Movember.
3) The PSA test isn't perfect but it is the best test we have for finding prostate cancer early. Do some research, talk to your doctor and figure out what is best for you.

Here is my week three Mo Pic and some more prostate pondering that contains a link to a Mayo Clinic paper that explains the studies that lead to the controversy over its value and a perspective on how it can be used to effectively catch the cancer early.

This week I have my follow-up appointment with my urologist to get my surgery referral process started.

Friday's Update:
Week Two Mo-Pic with Sheldon.

The scans (bone, CT & x-ray) completed last week show no signs metastasis. In layman's terms means there is no evidence that the cancer has spread. This is good news and paves the path for a surgical resolution to my issue.

My week one update . I went for the classic Trucker moustache this year. It is a family favourite.
The Bone Scan and CT scans are complete. Initial results from the Bone Scan show no signs that the cancer has spread. I should have the CT scan results next week.

Note: As donations can be made privately, not all donations are displayed to the public.
