My motivation
Fundraising for cause areas including:
Mental health and suicide prevention

If you’re a Gen x’er like me, 50 in January, you may have been raised similarly. Told to toughen up, suck it up, don’t be a whimp and even just told to rub some dirt on it. Ha! You probably ran amuck in the streets most summer days and drank from hoses. You may or may not have had two, three or four working parents(children of divorce) or maybe you just had one. Point being is we were alone a lot and mostly left to our own devices to “figure things out.” In my family we didn’t talk about feelings, and generally there wasn’t a lot of inquiries into our mental well-being.
Talk of therapy or as it was called back in the day, counseling, was reserved “problem kids.” Those aren’t my terms, but that’s how I remember it. Do your work, do your chores, your activities and keep your head down. They were different times, to say the least. All this is to say is that there wasn’t, in many cases, a lot of guidance when it came to dealing with feelings and emotions. There wasn’t much help in the way of navigating tough situations and choices in our younger, developmental years. Which shaped the way for how lots of us men deal with and dealt with issues into our 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond. Asking for help or saying you weren’t OK was taken as a sign of weakness. Now we know the opposite to be true.
However, still, too many men, too many of us still choose the permanency of suicide because the alternative seems far worse. Too many of us suffer in silence because that seems far easier than asking for help. I’m sure, I’m certain, a lot of us in our late 40’s and early 50’s know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m also sure there are a number of us who have felt like there was no way out. It doesn’t have to be that way for any of us! This is the biggest reason why I’ve supported Movember for the past 10 years. The awesome work Movember does here in the US and around the world helps men get the help we need for a myriad of issues effecting men. From mental health and suicide prevention to funding research to fight the spread of prostate cancer, the Movember Foundation is stopping men from dying to young each and every day. Join us!
